Internship
What is the ideal duration of my internship in South Africa?
Most companies and institutions are looking for interns for the period of at least 4 months, but even better is 5 months. After your internship you will most probably like to add a holiday as well.
The period of your stay can not be longer than 180 days.
This is not applicable for students coming in on a study permit, which can take up to 7 years..
Take care when applying for your visa. When arranging your flight with UNSA you will be able to postpone your return flight up to at least 11 months taken from the moment you arrived in the country. That’s why it’s a good idea to apply for a visa for the longest possible period..
Extending your visa will cost you money.
What paperwork do I need and must I immediately pay the first part of the enrolment fee?
The following paperwork will be required:
CV, Motivational letter, most recent list of marks and copy of passport. Most of the students add a separate list of preferences.
Payment of the first part of the enrolment fee goes together when sending the paperwork.
After you signed up with UNSA you will be able to get into your personal account on the website. This will allow to you login onto your personal part of the website where you can also find even more general information, but very much all your personal arrangements and possibilities we are working on.
Who will arrange the invitation for my internship? Do I have to arrange this myself?
UNSA will arrange your invitation and send this to you by e-mail.
When do I have to pay the second part of the enrolment fee?
Once you received your invitation you must make sure that the school accepts the placement . Sign the invitational letter and return this to the company and us by either fax or even better scan it in and mail this.
The second payment becomes due immediately.
Usually this payment is combined with the payment of the flight and possibly with the payment for the student weekend.
Must I enter my personal information on the website to enroll?
You can either inform us by e-mail and attach your CV at first or enter the basic personal information on the website. We will come back to you with further information.
Must I be a student to be able to gain practical experience in South Africa?
No in principle not, but note that one seldom gets a remuneration for work done as intern, so to be a student and have financial support from the Dutch government helps tremendously. In certain circumstances we are able to obtain financial support from a company or institutions, so the best is that when in doubt ask us to advice.
Can I also enroll when I want to do voluntary work?
Yes you can, but please remember that South Africa is a very popular place for volunteers and I must admit that I am sometimes astonished to see what institutions want for financial cover to allow you to come in. But we have some very interesting nature and social contacts where your work is highly appreciated and the stay is more affordable.
